Coordinates: 59°50′N 26°00′E. The Gulf of Finland ( Estonian: Soome laht; Finnish: Suomenlahti; Russian: Фи́нский зали́в; Swedish: Finska viken) is the easternmost arm of the Baltic Sea. It extends between Finland to the north and Estonia to the south, to Saint Petersburg in Russia to the east, where the river Neva drains into it.

Apr 1, 2021 · Geography. The Gulf of Finland extends for about 400 km from Saint Petersburg in the east to the Hanko Peninsula in the west. It has a maximum width of 130 km at its widest point. The gulf is relatively shallow with a maximum depth of 115 m and an estimated average depth of 38 m.

- Gulf of Finland Covers 30,000 square kilometres. The Gulf spans 12,000 square miles and is 400 km long, from Hanko Peninsula to St.Petersburg. It is about 150 to 175 km wide, widening as it extends north to St.Petersburg, Russia and then narrowing as it curves eastwards to Vyoborg Bay.

In the Gulf of Finland, the regional occurrence of different sediment types on the seabed is very patchy, especially in the northern part of the Gulf. Whether characterised by erosion or by the transportation and deposition of sediments, bottom types vary both locally and temporally.

The Baltic Proper, Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Riga and Gulf of Bothnia. The area of sea reaching from the Arkona Basin to the northern edge of the Gotland Basin is often referred to as the Baltic Proper or, alternatively, the main basin of the Baltic Sea. Two gulfs are located east of the Baltic Proper, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Riga.
Saltwater flows mainly along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, filling one basin after another. These water masses flow into the main basin of the Baltic Sea as far as the Gulf of Finland. As they do so, they renew the deep, isolated waters at the bottom of the basins.
