- 1970. The Last Poets, a collective of spoken word artists release their debut album. Their work is considered a predecessor to rap music as it is part of the Black Arts Movement.

Hip hop is a subculture and an art movement that emerged from the Bronx in New York City during the early 1970s. Its development reflected the negative effects of post-industrial decline, political discourse, and a rapidly changing economy. Looking back to New York City during this era, we see an economic collapse.
Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” is recognized as the first hip-hop record and was the first hip-hop recording to gain widespread popularity. The song, which samples Chic ’s “Good Times,” became a Top 40 hit in the US and saw even more success internationally, charting in the UK and Canada.
