Winchester (/ ˈ w ɪ n tʃ ɪ s t ər /, US also /-tʃ ɛ s-/) is a cathedral city in Hampshire, England.The city lies at the heart of the wider City of Winchester, a local government district, at the western end of the South Downs National Park, on the River Itchen.It is 60 miles (97 km) south-west of London and 14 miles (23 km) from Southampton, its nearest city.
Winchester’s fortunes however, began to decline during the 12th and 13th centuries as power and prestige gradually shifted to the new capital in London, including the relocation of the royal mint. Disaster struck Winchester in 1348-49 when the Black Death arrived, brought in from mainland Europe by migrating Asian black rats.
