The season was cut short by 6 episodes due to the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike. When the strike ceased, only four more episodes were produced. This forced the postponement of many planned expansions of the series mythology, such as Mary Winchester 's connection to Azazel and the escalating demon war. [35]
