The band's first two albums had a strong Southern rock influence. By the early 1980s, .38 Special had shifted to a more accessible guitar-driven arena rock style without completely abandoning the Southern rock roots. [5] This shift helped to usher in a string of successful albums and singles.
The band released its first single, “Long Time Gone,” in 1975, followed by their self-titled debut album in 1977. Over the years, 38 Special has released a total of 15 studio albums, multiple EPs, several live albums, and numerous compilation albums.

Donald Newton Van Zant (born June 11, 1952) is an American retired rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is best known for being a member of the band 38 Special, from its formation in 1974 until 2013.
