Carved out of limestone in the 1940s, this hidden metropolis was the vision of Lamar Hunt, famed founder of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- Why do the mines exist? Extensive limestone mining in the late 1800s and early 1900s created the millions of square feet of caves that are scattered throughout metropolitan Kansas City, in Kansas and Missouri.
- Who's there? Starting around the 1950s, investors started finding ways to use the abandoned underground space. A NASA employee needing an area to test sensitive navigational instruments was among the first official occupants.
- Storage space. The former limestone mines house about 400 businesses, many of which specialize in storage or warehousing because they are protected from extreme weather and can boast stable year-round temperatures and humidity.
- Are they all developed? While many of the caves feature paved roads and utilities, other areas consist of dirt floors and uncontrolled entrances. "If they haven't been used, no one knows what state of deterioration they are in," Hasan said.
