     I also got an error when I tried Tim Gerhard's solution. (I can't enter this as a comment to that answer because I'm a relatively new user.) After several iterations, I made it work (in an actual inline style), like this:

     <!-- In web.config --><appSettings> <add key="PageTitleStyle" value="style='color:red'"/></appSettings><!-- In the .aspx file --><span <asp:Literal runat="server" Text="<%$ AppSettings:PageTitleStyle %>" /> > Page Title Text Here</span>

     Note that in my actual application, I also get the page title text itself from Web.config, using the same syntax with a separate "add key" string.

     It would also be valid, and often considered preferable, in an "internal style sheet" form as Tim illustrates. In fact, re-reading your question, I think you'll want to do it that way.

     I tried it with just the string "red" in the key, but it wouldn't let me splice that into the inline style tag after "color:". So I ended up with the entire style string in Web.config. I didn't try it in an "internal style sheet" context, but it's just different enough that it might work.

     Supplemental information - In answer to Tim's question about the errors I received trying his construct (using Visual Studio 2013 and .Net 4). First I got:

     The expression prefix 'ConfigurationManager.AppSettings' was not recognized. Please correct the prefix or register the prefix in the section of configuration.

     When I removed "ConfigurationManager." then I got:

     The expression '<%$ AppSettings['PageTitleStyle'] %>' is invalid. Expressions use the syntax <%$ prefix:value %>.

     So then I changed the square bracket construct to use a colon. Then I got ("blockquote" doesn't work right with this one, so I'm using "code sample" formatting):

     Literal expressions like '<%$ AppSettingsa:PageTitleStyle %>' are not allowed.Use <asp:Literal runat="server" Text="<%$ AppSettingsa:PageTitleStyle%>" /> instead.-

     So that led me to the working syntax above.

     You could try adding: * { margin: 0; padding: 0; } to the very top of the css to reset all the browser defaults

     What it's saying is that you have the same background color and foreground color in some of your contexts. Example from your CSS (some declarations omitted for clarity):

     #red_module_top { background: url(http://www.gamefriction.com/Coded/images/red_content_top.jpg) no-repeat; color: #fff;}

     Notice how you set the color: #fff. This means your foreground color is white. But your background color is not set. You do set a background image but if for some reason the image is not available, then the background will also be white (because your body tag doesn't define a background color and the validator assumes that it's white), making the text invisible.

     You can just add a color to the background line to fix this. For example:

     background: #ff0000 url(http://www.gamefriction.com/Coded/images/red_content_top.jpg) no-repeat;-

     Now what happens is the validator will see that the background is different than the foreground and not complain.

     Well, the CSS validator shows you at which line the error/warning is, so that is already a start.

     Now to what (example)

     Same colors for color and background-color in two contexts .caseStudy-table ul li.boldtext and a:hover

     means:

     Your background color is the same as the text color. The validator shows a warning because it might not be possible to read the text. (Ever try to read white text on white background?)

     .caseStudy-table ul li.boldtext { background-color : #29a1d6; /* background-color */ color : #ffffff; font-weight : bold;}a:hover { color : #29a1d6; /* text color */}

     If you don't have a link in .caseStudy-table ul li.boldtext then it is ok. That is why the message is a warning and not an error.
