The dwarves never tried to take on Smaug. In the book, Bilbo goes down to Smaug's "bed" and steals a golden cup. He brings it back up to the dwarves to prove that he can burgle with the best of them. Smaug, while Bilbo is up there, wakes up and realizes that a cup has been stolen.
Whereabouts in the overall story of "The Hobbit" does everyone think Part 2 will end? Jackson won't change what happens in the book too much as it basically ends the same way.
