Dichotic listening has been used for many purposes to understand the nature and capacities of selective attention. For example, it has been used with a concurrent visual task to investigate the extent to which visual and auditory attention compete with one another—an important issue for understanding when and how humans are able to multitask.
Dichotic Listening is an experimental technique that examines our ability to process and attend to different sounds presented simultaneously, one in each ear. By presenting distinct auditory stimuli to each ear, researchers can study how the brain handles competing information and selectively focuses on one sound while filtering out the other.
Dichotic listening tasks require listeners to attend to different words, phrases, or short sentences presented simultaneously to each ear. For example, a listener under headphones may be presented the double-pair digits “6–2” in the left ear and, at the same time, “4-1” in the right.
