At 47 meters, it is one of the highest late Gothic gate towers in Germany. It was built between 1400 and 1428 by the cathedral master builder Madern Gerthener as a city gate of the late medieval Frankfurt city fortifications. Today, the now glazed archway houses a café, which opened a few years ago.
