Ferdinand II [b] (10 March 1452 – 23 January 1516) was King of Aragon from 1479 until his death in 1516. As the husband of and co-ruler with Queen Isabella I of Castile , he was also King of Castile from 1475 to 1504 (as Ferdinand V ).
Definition. Ferdinand II was the King of Aragon from 1479 until his death in 1516. He is best known for sponsoring Christopher Columbus' voyage to the Americas and for his marriage to Isabella I of Castile, which led to the unification of Spain.
The son of John II of Aragon (1398–1479), Ferdinand married Isabella of Castile in 1469 and fought to impose his authority over the nobles in the two kingdoms. As part of an effort to modernize Castile, they banned all religions other than Roman Catholicism, leading to the Spanish Inquisition (1478) and the expulsion of the Jews (1492).
Ferdinand's accomplished diplomacy and skillful military campaigns propelled Spain to the forefront of European politics. He annexed Naples (1504), which remained under Spanish control for over two centuries, added Navarre (1515), and waged war in Africa (1509 – 1511).
