Franklin's men spent the winter of 1845–46 on Beechey Island, where three crew members died and were buried. After travelling down Peel Sound through the summer of 1846, Terror and Erebus became trapped in ice off King William Island in September 1846 and are thought never to have sailed again.
The only officers with experience of the Arctic were Franklin, Crozier, Erebus First Lieutenant Graham Gore, Terror assistant surgeon Alexander McDonald, and the two ice-masters, James Reid (Erebus) and Thomas Blanky (Terror).
They accidentally shoot the man, whereupon they are set upon by the monster, which kills the expedition's fourth in command, Lieutenant Graham Gore. When the party returns to the ships, the woman follows them.

In 1836, Gore served as a Mate aboard the HMS Terror during Sir George Back's 1836 Arctic expedition in its attempt to survey and explore the North American Arctic coast. The Back Expedition became notorious for the damage sustained on the Terror in its attempt to reach Repulse Bay.
In August 1879, Schwatka found human skeletal remains and a disturbed grave on the central west coast of Graham Gore Peninsula (Schwatka, Reference Schwatka 1879, p. 146):
