Sie symbolisieren die Flüsse Mur, Enns, Drau und Sann, die durch die damalige Steiermark flossen. Im Jahr 2002 erfuhr der Hauptplatz eine Neugestaltung durch den Grazer Architekten Markus Pernthaler. Die große freie Fläche vor dem Rathaus schafft Raum, auch für diverse Veranstaltungen, die den Platz zusätzlich beleben.
Das erste Rathaus von Graz entstand im Jahr 1450 in der Judengasse. Dieses Alte Kanzlei genannte Gebäude wurde bald zu klein, und so wurde 1550 ein neues Rathaus im Renaissancestil am heutigen Standort am Hauptplatz errichtet.
