Dec 3, 2021 · Bloemenwerf, Henry Van de Velde’s property outside Brussels, is the inspiration for this chair. Van de Velde planned and built the house and the interior—from the furniture to the wallpaper —resulting in a holistic design that exemplified the concept of a Gesamtkunstwerk “total work of art”.
In parallel with this, a dedicated study will be made of van de Velde’s furniture designs, including a famous desk of 1899 with particularly pronounced Vitalist features, in order to gain a better understanding of the sources and influences behind the designs.

Henry van de Velde also designed interiors and furniture for the influential art gallery "L'Art Nouveau" of Samuel Bing in Paris in 1895, the shop from which Art Nouveau took its name. He participated in Bing's pavilion at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1900 and showed his own work.
Van de Velde gave everything in the house, from the door furnishings to the wallpaper, the same patterns of embellishments and flowing linear shapes, demonstrating the idea of Gesamtkunstwerk (“total work of art”) in the creation of a living space.
