    Which House Should You Choose

By Dio Lacayo, Brendan Graeber, Hannah Hoolihan, +24 more

When you start Hogwarts Legacy, the sorting hat will sort you into one of four different houses —Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Being in a house is more than just wearing specific colors, it changes elements of your gameplay to offer a unique experience relevant to the house you're in. This IGN wiki guide explains the main difference between the Hogwarts houses and which one you should choose. This house guide is for all versions of Hogwarts Legacy, including the original PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S versions of Hogwarts Legacy, as well as the Switch version from November, 2023.

While the sorting hat will appear in Hogwarts Legacy, you will be the one deciding the house you'll be sent to. So all you have to do is select your preferred house once the choice presents itself. If you want to immerse yourself, answering his question with the right house trait will prompt him to suggest the one you may be looking for, but you can always choose differently once the Sorting Hat suggests a house:

    •Bravery (Gryffindor)

    •Curiosity (Ravenclaw)

    •Loyalty (Hufflepuff)

If you're looking for a more personalized experience, you can make an account for the Harry Potter Fan Club (Wizarding World) and take the sorting hat quiz. Then, link your Harry Potter Fan Club account with your WB Games account to bring your wand and your preferred Hogwarts house into the game. Remember, you must also link your WB Games account to your console's account as well.

If you decide to link your accounts, you will also get special bonuses like an exclusive School Robe and a Beaked Skull Mask.

There are four houses you can join in Hogwarts, and while each house is distinct, it's important to note that aside from a single main quest, much of what you experience will be the same no matter which house you choose. The most important differences you will encounter involve the following:

•The House Colours incorporated into some of your gear will reflect your chosen house

•Exclusive access to your Common Room location (and a Floo Flame fast travel point not accessible to other houses)

•Extra socializing and introductions with other 5th year students in your house

•Certain extra dialogue that may reference your house

Interestingly, depending on your house, a quest leading up to meeting up with Richard Jackdaw will be different for players:

There does not appear to be any inherent bonuses, perks, or exclusive companions that are locked to one house. In fact, regardless of your house, you'll be able to socialize, undertake quests, and even group up with 5th year students from each of the houses - and some will have their own questlines that don't rely on you being in the same house as them. If you're a Wizarding World fan, though, perhaps the promise to be able to explore a classic location from the Harry Potter novels gives Hufflepuff a slight edge over the other three houses. But again, the choice is yours.

See the sections below to learn about known differences.

Known for their courage under fire, unwavering bravery, and stout-hearted chivalry, students of Gryffindor are the most likely to engage in heroics, and may be a safe bet for those wizard and witches willing to do the right thing no matter the cost.

Founded by Godric Gryffindor, the house is emblazoned with a lion and its colors are that of red and gold, and are featured in the different garments a Gryffindor student might wear. Students also gain exclusive access to the Gryffindor Common Room (seen in the video above), which is located in the South Wing's Gryffindor Tower -- and guarded by a portrait of a fat lady.

While joining Gryffindor won't affect the story in any notable way, you may have more chances to talk and get to know your fellow 5th year Gryffindor students, including Garreth Weasley (nephew of Professor Weasley), Nellie Oggspire, and Cressida Blume. You may also spend more time with Natasi Onai, who will accompany you on certain companion quests.

Other notable characters who were part of Gryffindor include Sir Nicholas d e Mimsy-Porpington, Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, and of course Harry Potter and his closest friends (most of which attended Hogwarts long after the events of the game).

Known for striving for cunning and ambition above all else, students of Slytherin are often cast in a more dubious light, as they are most often ones who plan to succeed in their endeavors with little regard for morality or consequence to others.

Founded by Salazar Slytherin, the house is represented by a snake and its colors are that of green and silver - and may be featured in the garments and scarves worn by Slytherin students. These students also have access to the Slytherin Common Room (seen in the video above), which is located down in the dungeons below the Grand Staircase, and is itself located underneath the large lake, casting an watery glow from its windows where you can view the fish from.

Joining Slytherin won't affect the story in any notable way (if you truly want to dabble in the Dark Arts, being sorted to this house isn't a prerequisite). However, you may have more chances to talk and get to know your fellow 5th year Slytherin students, including Ominis Gaunt, Imelda Reyes, and Sebastian Sallow. Sebastian in particular has an important storyline that you'll be able to undertake alongside him in companion quests.

Other notable characters who were part of Slytherin include the Bloody Baron, Merlin, Tom Riddle, and Severus Snape (most of which attended Hogwarts long after the events of the game).

Known for their wisdom, wit, and creative intelligence for solving problems, students of Ravenclaw are often assumed to be the smartest of their peers. Focusing less on raw power and more on the pursuit of academia, Ravenclaw prides itself on pursuing the magical arts with drive and diligence to become masters of spells and magic.

Founded by Rowena Ravenclaw, the house is represented by an eagle, and heralds in blue and bronze, which will likely become features on clothing worn by the students in its house. Ravenclaw's own common room is another off the branching towers of the Grand Staircase (seen in the video above), although instead of requiring a password, students are tasked with solving riddles to enter, and can enjoy its large vaulted room with wide open windows overlooking the grounds below.

Being sorted into Ravenclaw won't have any notable changes in the story in any notable way, but you may have more chances to talk and get to know your fellow 5th year Ravenclaw students, like Duncan Everett Clopton, Samantha Dare, and Amit Thakkar -- who may be able to join you on companion quests.

Other notable characters who were part of Ravenclaw include the Gray Lady, Uric the Oddball, Filius Flitwick, Sybill Trelawney, and Luna Lovegood (most of which are not alive during the events of Hogwarts Legacy).

Known for being the most inclusive house to invite anyone who valued hard work, the students of the Hufflepuff House are generally thought of as a good-natured lot, and pride themselves on patience, loyalty, and fair play. While not as ambitious or competitive as other houses, they are tried and true and still capable of great things - even if they aren't likely to boast about their accomplishments.

Founded by Helga Hufflepuff, the house is emblazoned by a badger alongside colors of yellow and black, which feature prominently on garments worn by students of Hufflepuff. Their common room is located quite close to the Great Hall's kitchens down a separate stair from the Grand Staircase to the cellars, and features a homely and cozy room full of various wonderful plants and fauna (seen in the video above) - and is even located close to the house-elf kitchens.

Hufflepuff students won't see any drastic changes to the story in any notable way, but you may have more chances to talk and get to know your fellow 5th year Hufflepuff students like Adelaide Oakes, Authur Plummly, and Lenora Everleigh. You'll also have more time to spend with Poppy Sweeting, who has an important companion questline to undertake with you.

Other notable characters whose lineage includes time spent in Hufflepuff include the Fat Friar, Newton Scamander, and Cedric Diggory.
