Today, CPW operates 19 hatcheries that breed, hatch, rear and stock over 90 million fish per year. Many of the fish produced are to enhance angling opportunities, while others serve a critical role in native species recovery efforts.

In Colorado, there is a total of 18 hatcheries raising 30+ species of fish which Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) operate. Twelve of these hatcheries are cold water facilities, two are warm water facilities, two are cold and warm water, and two are USFWS hatcheries.

Approximately 1 million fish are stocked out of Pitkin each year, including 150,000 catchable rainbow trout. Rio Grande cutthroat trout are raised as brood fish to enhance conservation of this native fish. The hatchery has been in operation by the Colorado Parks & Wildlife since 1912.
