That creepy clown Pennywise is back in a big way these days thanks to the huge success of last year's movie version of the 1986 Stephen King novel, It (which of course followed the 1990 TV adaptation of the same story). Yes indeed, Pennywise gonna get ya -- he looms large in the horror pantheon and inspires a lot of thought; there’s even one of those Internet “fan theories” (ugh) that suggests Pennywise is the same entity that appears as Killer Bob in Twin Peaks!

Now as the sequel to the film, It: Chapter 2, is ramping up and casting news is breaking (Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, James McAvoy, James Ransone, and Andy Bean will play the adult versions of the It kids, with Bill Skarsgård returning as the dastardly clown of the title), we figured it was time to once again explore who exactly Pennywise is and what his true nature is all about. • Stephen King wanted Pennywise to be a clown because clowns terrify children. Coulrophobia, or the fear of clowns, had been around long before King began writing It in the early 1980s.
    • Pennywise’s mortal enemy is a turtle. In the dense narrative of It, Pennywise seems to embody some of the most vicious evil in the universe. His counterpart is Maturin, a benevolent turtle that Losers’ Club member Bill Denbrough meets while traveling in the “Macroverse,” where Pennywise supposedly came from.
    • Alice Cooper was considered for Pennywise. Like most of King’s books, It was optioned for an adaptation. Originally, it was due to be directed by Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero, with whom King had collaborated on 1982’s anthology movie Creepshow.
    • Tim Curry thought of Pennywise as a “smile gone bad.” Thanks to his outsized performance, Curry may have done as much for Pennywise’s reputation as King.
  2. Feb 15, 2024 · In the original Stephen King novel IT, Billy (Jaeden Lieberher) glimpsed Pennywises's true form in the Deadlights for a moment, and he described it as an endless, crawling, hairy creature made of orange light. Though IT likes to manifest itself as a male clown named Pennywise, in the novel, IT also takes the form of an enormous female spider.
