An R-rated dystopian crime thriller that shocked the world upon its 1971 debut, Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange is here to stun audiences who – perhaps strangle, some might argue – haven’t seen it yet.

Malcolm McDowell plays Alex, a charismatic antisocial delinquent who leads a small violent gang known as the Droogs. However, when the group’s horrific chief is finally caught by the authorities, Alex is subjected to a terrifying experimental psychology-based treatment with the aim of rehabilitating him.

An extremely controversial and divisive film at the time, A Clockwork Orange is now considered a cult classic and easily one of Kubrick’s finest cinematic endeavors in his superb body of work. An outrageous but thematically important film that deserves spotlighting in our new Max movies guide.

Want a little bit of borderline-traumatic horror in your movie nights? Try Ari Aster’s Wicker Man-esque horror flick about a backpacking trip to a Swedish village that definitely isn't as lovely it seems. Florence Pugh (Black Widow, Oppenheimer) plays a young woman named Dani who’s in deep mourning, and whose trashy boyfriend and his awful friends offer little comfort as she adjusts to life in this strange place.

With February labelled the most romantic month of the year, there’s no better time than to watch (for the first or umpteenth time) this weepy romantic drama that turned Ryan Gosling into a hunk in the eyes of many.

The Barbie A-lister stars alongside Rachel McAdams (Doctor Strange) as Noah and Allie, a young couple who fall madly in love in the 1940s. Rather than tell this tale in the era it’s set, though, The Notebook sees an elderly Noah recount their story to a fellow nursing home resident in the present.

A melodrama that’s ripe for repeat viewings at this time of year, The Notebook will have you rolling your eyes at its schlocky romanticized moments, or crying tears of sadness (and occasionally joy) with its sentimental value.

Movie auteur David Fincher broke into the mainstream with his second feature in 1995 in the form of this pulsating crime thriller. Se7en stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as David William, police detectives at opposite ends of their careers who are paired together to stop a serial killer whose offences are based around the so-called seven deadly sins.

Rude musical comedies are fast becoming a subgenre in their own right, with the likes of Hazbin Hotel on Prime Video and stage play Avenue Q giving it a new lease of life in recent times. Dicks: The Musical, a Larry Charles-directed film that’s based on an off-Broadway musical, is the latest to add its name to the growing list of such genre productions.

    Release date: February 23

A biographical drama that shines a light on Priscilla Presley rather than her legendary rockstar boyfriend Elvis, this Sofia Coppola-directed movie has earned plenty of plaudits for its sensitive but shrewd approach to the duo’s complicated history and marriage. Cailee Spaeny plays the eponymous Priscilla, with Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi following in Austin Butler’s footsteps in the role of the Las Vegas-born artist.

Fans of Coppola’s work will find plenty to enjoy here, with the filmmaker’s keen eye for outstanding visuals and astute thematic exploration of how fame affects individuals on full show. Don’t be surprised if Priscilla joins Midsommar on our best Max movies list when we give that article a much-needed overhaul.

    • 20th Century Women. The time period and vibes of this dramedy are very much the counterculture of the ‘70s, even though writer/director Mike Mills made it in 2016.
    • Election. Alexander Payne’s brilliant black comedy is eerily prescient in its portrayal of an ambitious yet “unlikable” female politician, accusations of election fraud and men in power carrying out underhanded deeds to stay in power.
    • Far From the Madding Crowd. Before Thomas Vinterberg got a somewhat surprising Oscar nomination for directing the boozy comedy Another Round, he took a more serious turn helming this adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 1874 novel, with the help of a stellar cast.
    • Horrible Bosses. Theatrical R-rated comedies are a dying species, though the late Aughts and early Twenty-Tens could be considered their heyday thanks to titles like Horribles Bosses.
