Tyne Daly had previously played a detective in Dirty Harry sequel The Enforcer before signing on to Cagney & Lacey. Following the end of the series, Daly - who is the sister of actor Tim Daly - went on to other series like Judging Amy and the 2018 revival of Murphy Brown. She also appeared in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Sharon Gless joined Cagney & Lacey's cast during the second season and formed a lasting friendship with co-star Daly.
