    • Esi Edugyan, Chair of the 2023 judges, says: ‘We read 163 novels across seven months, and in that time whole worlds opened to us. We were transported to early 20th century Maine and Penang, to the vibrant streets of Lagos and the blackest depths of the Atlantic, and into a dystopic Ireland where the terrifying loss of rights comes as a hard warning.
    • Gaby Wood, Chief Executive of the Booker Prize Foundation, adds: ‘The range of experience, expertise and sensibility among this year’s judges led them to seek novels that both advanced the form and allowed the reader to understand something about the world; books that would have impact and longevity; books that moved them – and above all, books of such excellence and subtlety that the judges looked forward to re-reading them.

Sebastian Barry joins a select group of 10 other writers who have been nominated for the Booker Prize at least five times, including Beryl Bainbridge, William Trevor and David Mitchell.
  2. Nov 27, 2023 · Earlier this year, Time Shelter by Georgi Gospodinov (translated by Angela Rodel) won the 2023 International Booker Prize. Gospodinov became the first Bulgarian author to take home the award.

    • Prophet Song - Paul Lynch. The story: Prophet Song depicts an Ireland in the grip of a totalitarian regime some time perhaps in the near future. The Stack family are grappling with a terrifying new world in which the democratic norms they are used to begin to disappear.
    • The Bee Sting - Paul Murray. The story: This epic page-turner is about a family derailing and the secrets they keep. It's narrated at different times by all four members of the Barnes clan: car dealer, Dickie, his legendarily beautiful wife, Imelda, and their two children, Cass and PJ.
    • Study For Obedience - Sarah Bernstein. The story: Study for Obedience is an unsettling novel about a woman who moves to a remote country to become her brother's housekeeper (creepily, she soaps his back as part of her duties and he only allows her to watch TV with the subtitles on).
    • If I Survive You - Jonathan Escoffery. The story: If I Survive You is a a series of eight linked stories, set mainly in Miami. This debut novel is primarily centred on Trelawny, the son of Jamaican immigrants.
  3. The 2023 winner will be announced on Sunday, 26 November at an award ceremony held at Old Billingsgate. The winner receives £50,000 and a trophy designed by the late Jan Pieńkowski. In a recent public vote, the trophy was named ‘Iris’ in honour of the 1978 Booker winner Iris Murdoch.
