Population. 1293 (2009) Ethnic groups. Melanesian, Polynesian. Vanikoro (sometimes wrongly named Vanikolo) is an island in the Santa Cruz group, located 118 kilometres (73 miles) to the Southeast of the main Santa Cruz group. It is part of the Temotu Province of Solomon Islands .
Comprised of two high volcanic islands, Vanikoro is bordered by a fringing reef and a pristine lagoon. The southernmost of the Santa Cruz Island group, Vanikoro is a remote island paradise seldom visited by tourists.
The province consists of, Nendo (Santa Islands) Vanikoro, Utupua, Duff, Tikopia, Anuta, Reef Islands, and the atoll islands of Pileni, Matema, Nukapu, and Nupani. Oct 28, 2019 · This morning found us anchored in Dillon's Passage, between the two lushly forested islands of Vanikoro. In the morning we visited the village of Usily on the larger island of Banie. Here we found an ocean-going outrigger sailing canoe called a Te Puke , complete with a small thatched house on its deck to protect the crew.
