The Three Musketeers is a 1935 film directed by Rowland V. Lee and starring Walter Abel, Heather Angel, Ian Keith, Margot Grahame, and Paul Lukas. It is the first English-language talking picture version of Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel The Three Musketeers.
His first major film role was as D'Artagnan in RKO Pictures' 1935 The Three Musketeers, and as hyperactive agent Danny Reed in the 1942 musical comedy Holiday Inn, with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Abel went on to play in more than sixty films, and was a vice president of the Screen Actors' Guild.
Abel had a strong supporting cast in the three musketeers: Paul Lukas , Moroni Olsen, and Onslow Stevens. Imposing European leading man Lukas and LA native Stevens had transitioned from silent films. This was Olsen's first movie, but he was a stage actor with his own acting troupe and some Broadway experience.
