  1. The dates of death listed are from the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 to the surrender of Japan on 2 September 1945, when the United States was officially involved in World War II. Included are generals and admirals who were killed by friendly or hostile fire, suicide, or accidents (usually airplane crashes).

  2. The lists contain the names of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel on active duty whose deaths resulted directly from enemy action or from operational activities against the enemy in war zones from December 7, 1941, to the end of World War II. The lists do not include casualties that occurred as a result of disease, homicide, or suicide.
