     exec 3>&1 4>&2 1>>/tmp/output.log 2>&1 does the following:

     • make file descriptor 3 a copy of stdout
     • make file descriptor 4 a copy of stderr
     • redirect-append stdout to file /tmp/output.log
     • make stderr a copy of stdout

     File descriptors 3 and 4 are maybe used here as temporary storage, such that the initial stdout and stderr can be restored with exec 1>&3 2>&4.

     The third redirection sends stdout to /tmp/output.log in append mode. The last redirection makes stderr a copy of stdout, that is, also sends stderr to /tmp/output.log in append mode. Note that the order of these 4 redirections matters.

     I want the script to write stdout

     and stderr

     to the /tmp/output.log

     as well as display in console while it is running. How should the redirection look like?

     Redirect stdout to a tee -a /tmp/output.log command using process substitution. Then redirect stderr to stdout. Example:

     Decomposing the line

     ping -n 40 127.0.0.1-

     Send 40 ping packets to local host. If there is not any problem the default behaviour is to wait 1 second between packets, so it generates a 39 second delay

     >nul or 1>nul-

     Redirects anything written to the standard output stream (stream number 1) to the nul device. Anything sent to this device is discarded. The effect is that all the normal output of the ping command is hidden.

     2>&1-

     This redirects anything written to the standard error stream (stream number 2). As in the previous case, this is done to hide output (errors in this case), but instead of directly requesting to write to the nul device (we could have done 2>nul), this syntax requests to send data in the standard error stream to a copy of the handle used in the standard output stream.

     It's Array.sort and has nothing to do with jQuery. Remember that jQuery is yet another library developed in javascript.

     The MDN explains this already:

     If compareFunction is supplied, the array elements are sorted according to the return value of the compare function. If a and b are two elements being compared, then:

     • If compareFunction(a, b) is less than 0 , sort a to a lower index than b , i.e. a comes first.
     • If compareFunction(a, b) returns 0 , leave a and b unchanged with respect to each other, but sorted with respect to all different elements. Note: the ECMAscript standard does not guarantee this behaviour, and thus not all browsers (e.g. Mozilla versions dating back to at least 2003) respect this.
     • If compareFunction(a, b) is greater than 0, sort b to a lower index than a .
     • compareFunction(a, b) must always return the same value when given a specific pair of elements a and b as its two arguments. If inconsistent results are returned then the sort order is undefined

     It's not mandatory to return only -1 or 1.
