Applied ethnomusicology is a field of practice and theory, rather than a discipline with a bounded subject and an established, universally agreed-upon methodology. A branch of the academic discipline of ethnomusicology, its scope is still expanding.
I then propose four key concepts in ethnomusicology, and explain how these are apparent in museum displays of musical instruments: the materiality of music, the process of ‘musicking’ in museums; the ethics of representation and ownership; and applied ethnomusicology.
