According to The Northern Exposure Book, the moose in the opening titles was named Mort and was provided by Washington State University, where he was part of a captive herd. To film the opening sequence, the crew fenced off Roslyn, set Mort loose, and lured him around with food.

Roslyn is where the exteriors were filmed for the quirky 1990s TV series Northern Exposure, set in fictional Cicely, Alaska.
With Barry Corbin, Janine Turner, John Cullum, Darren E. Burrows. A city doctor is forced to work in the remote Alaskan town of Cicely, where he encounters peculiar locals, including a former astronaut, as he adjusts to small-town life.
The accessibility to the Seattle metro area, where they filmed interior scenes at sound stages, also made the town the ideal filming location for “Northern Exposure.” Since the series premiered, Roslyn has hosted an annual Northern Exposure Festival.
Some inside shots like the interior of the Brick Tavern and Dr. Fleischman's home were filmed in a studio in Redmond, WA., about 90 miles east of Roslyn. Both Lake Cle Elum, eight miles northwest of Roslyn, and the Easton airport, 20 miles west off I-90 were filming sites as well.
