  2. William Bingham (March 8, 1752 – February 7, 1804) was an American statesman from Philadelphia. He was a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress from 1786 to 1788 and served in the United States Senate from 1795 to 1801. [1]

  3. In 1797, Lansdowne was purchased at auction for $55,100 by none other than the Penn's old tenant, William Bingham (1752-1804). Despite the economic Panic of 1797, Bingham paid $31,050 upfront and took on the $24,050 mortgage.

  4. In 1780, Ann married the exceptionally wealthy William Bingham. The pair lived abroad throughout the 1780s, and upon their return to America, built what was then the most opulent, grand house in Philadelphia.

  5. Soon after his return to Philadelphia, Bingham was elected speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1790. From 1795 to 1801, Bingham served as a United States senator. The 1790s proved to be the high point of Bingham’s public life.
