David Masiel is the acclaimed author 2182 Kilohertz. He spent his early years in Richmond, California, where he was exposed to sea stories by his grandfather, a master mariner whose career spanned fifty-four years.

SIDELIGHTS: David Masiel, who was often told tales of the sea by his master-mariner grandfather when he was a boy growing up in northern California, tells a seafaring story of his own in his first book, 2182 kHz. The plot involves Henry Seine, who after learning that his wife is leaving him, decides to find work on an Alaskan tugboat.
David Masiel’s first novel, 2182 Kilohertz, was one of the most greatly praised books of 2002. A riveting adventure of an unlikely hero’s quest for personal redemption in frigid arctic waters, it earned its author comparisons to such giants of nautical fiction as Melville and Conrad.

David Maisel is an artist whose work spans photography, painting, and video. He is the recipient of Fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Getty Research Institute, and the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been an Artist in Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts, among other awards and honors.
