The Florentines started to work in the Sistine Chapel in the spring of 1481. Beneath the cycles of The Life of Moses and The Life of Christ, the lower level of the walls is decorated with frescoed hangings in silver and gold. Above the narrative frescos, the upper tier is divided into two zones.

The large project of the Sistine Chapel began in 1473. The crumbling remains of the previous building were destroyed, keeping the bases of the walls intact and the asymmetrical plan of the building remained intact. The construction was reinforced with a base and the ceiling covered with new vaults.

The Sistine Chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere (pontiff from 1471 to 1484) who had the old Cappella Magna restored between 1477 and 1480.
History. Pre-existence: the Magna Chapel. The Sistine Chapel was born from the remains of the Magna Chapel (also Domini Pape Chapel), one of the three structures mentioned by Giannozzo Manetti in the biography of Pope Nicholas V in 1455, located in a Vatican garden called “paradise”.
