    Trader Vic's Mai Tai Recipe
    Yummly
There are two original Mai Tai recipes - this is the Trader Vic's version. But ever since, bartenders have been tweaking this recipe, so feel free to experiment. Whatever you come up with, it will be a delicious fruity rum cocktail.

Probably the most famous of all tiki-tropical drinks. The classic is a very simple and delicious drink, created by Vic Bergeron of Trader Vic's in 1944 in Oakland, California. The story goes that Vic created this rum drink for some friends who were visiting from Tahiti. Upon tasting it, one of his friends exclaimed, "Maita'i roa ae!" which means "Very good of the very best!" Thus Vic named the drink the Mai Tai. Unfortunately, many restaurants and bars across the country have taken a number of liberties with the recipe, making drinks that are pale replicas of the original.

The Mai Tai Cocktail is a beautiful tribute to rum....fine aged rum. If you like rum, you will like this strong cocktail. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a fruity cocktail and I cringe when I see bartenders add fruit juices to this perfect drink. If you like fruity drinks try a zombie or Maui Mai Tai - but if you like rum, this is a celebration. This is NOT the original Mai Tai recipe, but it is a fabulous version . The original Mai Tai was created in the early 40's by Trader Vic in Oakland. The name of the drink comes from the reaction of its first samplers, who were from Tahiti, when they exclaimed "Mai Tai - Roa Ae", which means "Out of This World - The Best".
