- Brutalist architecture. Brutalist architecture emerged in the 1950s as a reaction against the nostalgia and ornamentation of 1940s architecture. The term “Brutalism” comes from the French phrase “béton brut” meaning raw concrete, referring to the extensive use of unfinished, exposed concrete in Brutalist buildings.
