- 2:10Ukraine's new judges aim to end corruption and pave path to EUReuters VideosSTORY: Swearing an oath some have waited years to take. These newly minted judges are tasked with creating trust in the courts for Ukraine's European aspirations to be realized. Olha Vdovychenko is one of nearly 250 judges recently appointed to firmly establish the rule of law and finally dismantle a Soviet legacy of corruption and impunity. She knows the pressure she faces. "Sometimes the pressure is so strong. You have to always be aware that you’re a judge, that you can't even cross the street on a red light. You have to abide by the rules in your private life as well as on the job." Their appointments were stalled by political tussles even before Russia's invasion. But the European Union has insisted on a judicial overhaul. And Kyiv wants to join the EU to cement its shift away from Moscow's orbit. Winning the trust of the war-weary population back will be difficult though. Some 70% of Ukrainians distrust the judicial system, according to a March survey by a Kyiv think tank. Their cynicism fueled by years of corruption. Ievgen Zavgorodnii is a former anti-corruption investigator who has returned from the eastern front lines to join the bench. He says corruption in the judiciary is no more widespread than in other state institutions, but judges are more visible. "For better or for worse, because judges are objects of intense scrutiny from society for their mistakes, their misdeeds, their actions affecting their reputation are more noticeable." A clean-up operation in the system is ongoing with a former head of the Supreme Court awaiting trial for accepting a $2.7 million bribe, a charge that he denies. While another judge charged with being drunk when he crashed his car into, and killed, a national guardsman at a checkpoint, is also on trial.16 hours ago

- 0:21Modi arrives in Kyiv for talks with Ukraine's ZelenskiyReuters VideosSTORY: :: India's Narendra Modi arrives in Kyiv for talks with Ukraine's President Zelenskiy :: August 23, 2024 :: Kyiv, Ukraine :: It's an important visit for Kyiv, which rebuked Modi for visiting Moscow last month This is the first trip by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine since Kyiv gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The visit comes at a volatile juncture in the war in Ukraine, with Ukrainian forces still in Russia's western Kursk region following their incursion on August 6 and Russian troops grinding out slow but steady advances in Ukraine’s east. The visit, which follows a trip by Modi to Moscow in July, is important for Western-backed Kyiv, which has been trying to nurture diplomatic relations in the Global South in its efforts to secure a fair settlement to end the war. In the run-up to the trip, Modi said he was looking forward to sharing "perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict.” Modi's visit to Moscow coincided with a heavy Russian missile strike on Ukraine that hit a children's hospital. The attack prompted Modi to use emotive language to deliver an implicit rebuke to Russian President Vladimir Putin at their summit. But the trip elicited fierce criticism from Zelenskiy.21 hours ago

- 1:06Meet Ukraine’s canine recruits sniffing for landminesReuters VideosSTORY: :: This sniffer dog and its handler are tasked with clearing landmines across Ukraine :: Kyiv, Ukraine :: August 21, 2024 :: Karina Buchma, Dog handler "I grew up with dogs, I grew up being surrounded by the animals. I love them very much. I wanted to work in this field and an opportunity has come up. I am doing what I love and I am helping my country." "We plan to work in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions. The experience I received abroad will help me a lot. I know what a minefield looks like, I've been there, I have seen it with my own eyes, and I got a taste of it. When I walk into the minefield wearing protective gears, carrying the backpack, and walking the dog, I already know that anti-tank, anti-personnel landmines, or any other sort of ordnance can be anywhere." About 25 percent of Ukraine’s territory is contaminated with mines and explosive devices, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. Crews underwent five months of training in Cambodia, and project representatives say a dog can inspect up to 1,500 square meters of land per day, as compared to 20-50 square meters by a person. The joint initiative by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and APOPO, a non-profit organization known for innovative use of trained animals, aims to boost efforts in demining in Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Kharkiv regions.2 days ago

But Russia claims its forces halted Kyiv’s advance in the Kursk region, and says it has gained ground in eastern Ukraine. The military is responding to the Russian push there, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, by strengthening its forces around Pokrovsk. Drone video released Wednesday by the Ukrainian 68th brigade showed artillery strikes on Russian troops east of Pokrovsk in Donetsk region. Both sides reported being targeted by major drone attacks.
