The Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie has been a labor of Wabaunsee County love. When Will Mitchell, son of abolitionist Captain William Mitchell, passed away in 1953, he left the prairie to the Kansas Historical Society with instructions that the 30-acre hilltop prairie on his father’s farm be converted into a public park where people could come to learn about the abolitionist history of Kansas.
