Walnut Grove is a city in Redwood County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 871 at the 2010 census. Another name formerly associated with the area is Walnut Station.
Walnut Grove A mile and a half north of town is the site of the dugout where the Ingalls family lived before building their house. The land is now owned by the Gordon family, who welcome visitors to come see the plum thickets, table lands, big rock and spring that Laura described in the book.
Enjoy learning the history of the Ingalls Family in Walnut Grove at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and Gift Store. The museum’s collections are housed in a series of interesting buildings, including an 1898 depot, an onion-domed house, dugout display, little red schoolhouse, early settler home, Masters Store & Hall, and covered wagon display.
Walnut Grove is located in the Southwest corner of Redwood County, Minnesota. We are situated in a thriving agriculture area with plenty of recreational opportunities with many lakes, parks, golf courses, bike trails, camping, and museums.
The community of Walnut Grove began in 1870. A nation, fresh from civil war, had literally been torn apart. Its citizens sought new beginnings, far from the settled eastern states.
Key attractions include the Ingalls’ dugout site, where the family once lived, and the Walnut Grove museum, which showcases memorabilia and artifacts from the Ingalls’ era. Visitors can also take a stroll along Plum Creek, immersing themselves in the serene landscape that inspired Wilder’s writings.
