The history of West Newbury begins with its Indigenous past. The land on which the town resides is the traditional homeland of Indigenous cultures for thousands of years before the Algonquians of the Wabanaki culture, who lived here in the 500 to 800 years or more prior to European contact.
For a handful of summers starting in 1957, West Newbury was home to cowboys, Indians, monkeys, and bears—not to mention the pirate ship, the railroad, and the big blue house-sized shoe.

West Newbury’s first library was formed in 1819, the year West Newbury became a town. Called the “First Social Library” it was a private institution that was housed in many different places including the #1 school house, barber shop and First Parish Meeting House.
