The uncanny X-Men are a team of mutant superheroes. Initially formed as a class of young mutants enrolled at the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, the roster has expanded over decades, featuring a rotating line-up composed of a diverse number of teams.

Besides the main team, this list also includes the numerous spin-off X-Men teams that were at some point officially considered part of the group. These teams are, in alphabetical order:

•Cyclops' Extinction Team / X-Men (New Charles Xavier School)

    •Genoshan Assault X-Men

    •Street Team X-Men

    •Jean Grey's X-Men

The original members of the X-Men formed the first class of the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters under Professor X's tutelage.

Following the X-Men's graduation, some few new mutants occasionally joined their ranks. However, the core composed by the five original students remained as the main team.

As the X-Men were trapped in the hostile island of Krakoa, Professor X formed a team with unexperienced young mutants secretly tutored by Moira for a rescue mission. The mission was tragic and the group was presumed dead.

In a second attempt to save the X-Men, Professor X recruited a pluricultural team formed by mature mutants from different countries of the globe. These all-new, all-different X-Men radically altered the composition of the team.

In between the death of the Phoenix and the Fall of the Mutants event, the X-Men gradually welcomed new members that made their roster more complex.

Following the events of the Fall of the Mutants, in which the X-Men were presumed dead, Moira assembled a team to protect mutantkind's interests in her research center at Muir Island. This splinter team was corrupted by the Shadow King and put down by the cojoined efforts of the reformed X-Men and X-Factor.

After a tragic dissolution, the X-Men gradually reformed their ranks. In the process, new mutant heroes joined the team as it returned to its origins at the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

After events such as Age of Apocalypse and Operation: Zero Tolerance, the X-Men get new blood, incorporating a new genesis of mutants to its ranks.

The mutant population thrived and experienced a boom after the Legacy Virus was eradicated,[122] which was followed by the genocide on Genosha.[123] During this period, the X-Men welcomed a diverse bunch of new members into their ranks.
