     If you compile this code using GCC, it will show a warnings like type of 'a' defaults to ‘int’, since C implicitly assumes type of arguments as int, when not specified.

     The feature where you don't have to specify the type of an argument in a function was added in order to provide backwards compatibility with older versions of the language, the K&R version of the language. When GCC encounters an "old style" function, it conforms to the old K&R C behaviour which implies no warnings in this situation.

     One possible reason why you are getting undefined results maybe because the calling code doesn't know that it needs to cast the arguments to int and hence passes float instead. Your function test then either reads registers/stack locations that floats weren't copied to or receives the bit representations of float arguments and treats them as an int. Either of these will result in incorrect values of a, b, c being received.

     Note that if you explicitly specify the type of arguments like int test(int a, int b, int c), then it would type-cast the floats, and then pass them to the function, with output 5.

     Here's what I think it will look like, give or take a little hacking. I've structured the code as a single loop, that just polls all three sensors at 5 second intervals. So every 5 seconds, the on/off status of all three lights might change. I figure for watering a lawn, you don't really need split-second precision in terms of knowing when it got hot, or dark, or whatever.

     Based on your replies in the comments section of the OP, there might have to be some computation done involving the return values of the sensor readings. I figure it's probably easier to do the computation at compile time, so the code is biased that way.

     But I don't get what kind of operation is going on here --> n = 10 * n

     That's just how you build a number digit by digit. It's basically the same as it would work if you were writing a calculator. If I wrote a simple calculator, here's how it would handle the input 547:

     • Start with 0
     • 5 ==> 0*10 + 5 = 5
     • 4 ==> 5*10 + 4 = 54
     • 7 ==> 54*10 + 7 = 547

     Basically, atoi does, the exact same thing, but instead of reading each digit from button presses, it's reading them from a string. Each time you read a new digit, you do n *= 10 to make room for that next digit, which just gets directly added on the end.

     execl is one of the several functions (exec*) that let you replace the current code of your process with the one provided by the file (an executable one) specified as the first argument. The whole space of your process is replaced by a fresh one... Other arguments serve as arguments to the command. A process is a kind of system structure controlling execution of some code. exec lets you mutate that code.

     In the case exec succeed then the old code is forgotten, you will never be able to get back into it. This is not a function call.

     In the case exec fails then execution continues, and in your case a call to _exit is made. _exit is a system function designed to stop execution of the current process, leading to its death. exit is a C-function that does the same at C-level, roughly closing C-streams and calling _exit.

     The value provided (127) is used to communicate some information about the termination of this process to the process that launched it (process are launched by the use of fork, a call that clones a process). The value can be any eight bit value, but 0 is used to denote a process that terminated correctly, and any other non 0 value to denote a process that terminated in some abnormal condition.

     If it is declared via #define then it is not a variable, it is a literal constant! Declare your gameSize as a (global) variable (outside any function) for example:
