Mance Lipscomb (1895–1976) considered himself to be a Texas sharecropper and songster. He was the first artist recorded by Arhoolie, and the album—fittingly titled Texas Sharecropper and Songster —resulted in invitations to music festivals and additional recordings over the remainder of his life.
