One can relate with overbearing religious parents, others can relate being sexually abused, others simply been bullied and have empathy for her. She has no flaws that make you distrust her so people loved the character, as did I.

Kate is definitely alive at the end if you save Arcadia Bay, even if she died in Episode 2. She attends Chloe's funeral. If you sacrificed Arcadia Bay her fate is less certain. She's obviously still dead if she died in Episode 2.
