Stockton is a city in and the county seat of San Joaquin County in the Central Valley of the U.S. state of California. Stockton is the most populous city in the county, the 11th-most populous city in California and the 58th-most populous city in the United States. Stockton's population in 2020 was 320,804.
The City of Stockton was officially incorporated on July 23, 1850. Stockton’s charter from the State of California dates from 1851. By 1854, Stockton was the fourth largest city in California. Today, Stockton is the county seat of San Joaquin County with a current population of 446,000.
Located on the San Joaquin Delta, Stockton is the world's most inland natural port and was previously a major port city. One of the larger cities along I-5 through the Central Valley, it is a convenient stop and offers a variety of restaurants and accommodations for road-trippers.
Stockton was the first community in California to have an English name; every other community up to that point had been Spanish or Native American in origin. The City was officially incorporated on July 23, 1850, by the County Court, and the first City election was held on July 31, 1850.
