Unable to continue with her medical studies, Nasser spends her days playing songs on the rubble of buildings or on rooftops overlooking her new neighbourhood. Despite her passion in music, Nasser hopes to be able to continue her medical degree and, she says, "help my people" in Gaza. Israel has besieged and laid waste to much of the Gaza Strip since launching an offensive in retaliation for the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack that killed some 1,200 people in Israel, according to Israeli tallies.      STORY: Parents of Israeli-American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin - kidnapped by Hamas during the October 7th attack - told Reuters on Monday that they support any measures necessary for his release. They spoke as NBC News reported that U.S. officials are considering negotiating a unilateral deal with Hamas militants to secure the release of five American hostages held in Gaza. "We hear rumors today that the United States is negotiating something or might. I would not be surprised if either at the same time or soon thereafter we hear about Germany and Argentina and so many of the other countries whose citizens are also being held. Whatever it takes to get everybody home we support." Rachel Goldberg-Polin and Jon Polin, have been campaigning for their son's release, along with the release of 120 others still held in Gaza, after over 100 hostages were released in a deal in November last year and 7 more were rescued in Israeli army operations. In the latest such operation on Saturday (June 8), Israeli forces were able to rescue four hostages from a densely populated area in Gaza. Hamas says over 200 Palestinians were killed during the operation. The Polins spoke to Reuters in Jersualem about the moment that news broke about that rescue. "It was just so miraculous and we were so excited. You know, we know two of those families fairly well through the last eight months. And every hostage is a win. It's a celebration of life. And we were relieved for them to be reunited, especially we knew Noa Argamini's mom was in such dire condition and we've been praying for her to be able to see her daughter. So we were elated." She added more needed to be done: "120 people to still be in captivity is absolutely unacceptable. And I think that the leaders have to put politics aside and egos aside and do the right thing by these people and by all the people who are suffering in the region. The United States says Hamas is holding five Americans who were taken hostage in the group's deadly Oct. 7 incursion inside Israel. Officials are hoping to recover the bodies of three other Americans who were killed that day, NBC reported. Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, a response to the incursion, has killed 37,000 people, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory. When asked about the NBC report while he was leaving Cairo, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the latest U.S. proposal for a ceasefire deal was quote, "the most effective way to get everyone home."

     STORY: Palestinian couple Mahmoud and Fatima Jarghoun have sold their jewelry so they could perform the haj pilgrimage to Mecca. They have been yearning to make the journey for years. But with no way out of the Gaza Strip, their dream of getting to Saudi Arabia has been shattered. “They even want to deny us our worship, they even want to deny us the haj. I don’t know who we should complain to or cry to or speak to. Who should we go to? We ask God to relieve us (of this situation) and for them to open the border.” Jarghoun said the deep disappointment of being unable to make the pilgrimage had compounded the pain inflicted by the war. His home in Khan Younis has been destroyed. He estimates the repair would cost some $20,000. The haj is one of the five basic obligations of a Muslim and every believer who has the means should perform the pilgrimage at least once in his or her lifetime. It begins on Friday (June 14). Pilgrims are already piling into Mecca for the occasion. Some of them, like Alia Asmaa, say they hope to see a ceasefire deal. "Our prayers are with Gaza and it is very sad to see people dying everyday so my wish for Gaza is that this war will end very soon." Palestinians typically wait years for their turn after registering their names with the Palestinian authorities. The couple said they had been waiting almost 18 years. “Every year, we wait to go to haj and it doesn’t happen. I sold my jewelry and all that is in my possession because we had a debt due to the house that we built, we could not otherwise register. After our names came through, the war happened, and all our hope was lost. We were very happy that our name came through and we were going to go. At the end, all our dreams were gone. In a televised news conference, Gantz said Netanyahu is (quote) "preventing us from advancing toward true victory," and that politics was clouding fateful strategic decisions in his cabinet. He added that stepping down while hostages were still in Gaza and soldiers were still fighting there was an excruciating decision. A former general, Gantz had joined Netanyahu's inner war cabinet soon after the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas, where he, the prime minister and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant were the only voting members. "I was very privileged together with my friends to bring to the Cabinet Room all the experience we have. I know that the other people are staying mainly Yoav Gallant and Prime Minister himself. They know what should be done. Hopefully they will stick to what should be done and then it will be okay." Gantz last month had presented Netanyahu with a June 8 deadline to come up with a clear postwar strategy for Gaza. Netanyahu brushed off the ultimatum soon after it was given. While the departure of Gantz's centrist party will not pose an immediate threat to Israel's government, it could have a serious impact. It leaves Netanyahu reliant on hardliners, with no end in sight to the Gaza war and a possible escalation in fighting with Lebanese Hezbollah. This would likely increase strains already apparent in relations with the U.S. and intensify public pressure at home, with the war still not achieving its stated goals - the destruction of Hamas and the return of more than 100 remaining hostages held in Gaza. After announcing his resignation, Gantz urged Netanyahu to agree on an election date in the fall, to avoid further political infighting at a time of national emergency. Polls have shown Gantz to be the most formidable political rival to the prime minister. Netanyahu responded to Gantz's resignation in a social media post, telling him it was no time to abandon the battlefront.

     Israel rescues four hostages in Gaza

     STORY: This is the moment three of the four freed Israeli hostages disembarked from a helicopter after Israeli forces recused them from Nuseirat, an area in central Gaza Strip on Saturday (June 8). The four hostages were kidnapped by Hamas-led militants from the Nova music festival in southern Israel on Oct. 7 last year. The attack precipitated the devastating war in Gaza. The freed hostages also include Noa Argamani, who was seen in a video released by Israel reuniting with her father. Video of her kidnapping, showing her shouting "Don't kill me!" as she was driven into Gaza on a motorbike, had circulated soon after she was taken. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to the hospital to meet the rescued hostages. Israeli military released a video of the rescue operation. Its spokesperson Daniel Hagari said the operation took place under fire in the heart of a residential neigborhood. He said Hamas had been hiding captives among Gaza civilians under guard by armed militants. Hagari added that Israeli forces returned fire, including with airstrikes. A police statement said one Israeli special forces solider was killed during the operation. A very different picture unfolded back in Gaza. Palestinian health ministry officials and local medics said an Israeli military assault in the same area the hostages were rescued killed scores of people including women and children. The ministry did not say how many of the fatalities were combatants. Emergency response teams were trying to ferry the dead and wounded to hospital in the nearby city of Deir al-Balah but many bodies were still lying in the streets, according to local residents.
