The building was originally part of the Dominican (Jacobin) monastery founded in 1245. It is Leeuwarden's oldest building. In 1256 the famous theologian Albertus Magnus visited the monastery and preached in the church. [1] In 1392 the building was damaged by a fire. It was restored in 1394.
Ze bezaten sinds 1591 onder het koor van de Grote of Jacobijnerkerk in Leeuwarden een grafkelder die in 1640 en 1696 werd uitgebreid. In de grafkelder van de Friesche Nassau's, de graven van Nassau-Dietz, werden tussen 1623 en 1765 tien lijkkisten bijgezet. In de kapel boven de kelder stonden nog eens zes kisten.

Grote of Jacobijnerkerk is the largest medieval church in Leeuwarden, built between 1275-1310. It was originally part of the Dominican abbey. It was badly damaged by fire in 1392. The large southern hall was added in the late 15th century and the nave enlarged in the early 16th century. The organs were made by famous Christian Müller in 1727.

De karakteristieke plenumklank kenmerkt zich vooral door kracht en doordringendheid, terwijl het bovenwerk typerende karakterstemmen en ingetogen soloregisters laat horen.
