Vashti ( Hebrew: וַשְׁתִּי, romanized : Vaštī; Koinē Greek: Ἀστίν, romanized: Astín; Modern Persian: واشتی, romanized : Vâšti) was a queen of Persia and the first wife of Persian king Ahasuerus in the Book of Esther, a book included within the Tanakh and the Old Testament which is read on the Jewish holiday of Purim.
Vashti Murphy McKenzie (born May 28, 1947) is the President and General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA. She is also a retired bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and author of six books. In 2000, McKenzie became the first woman to be elected as bishop in the denomination's history.
