Durrës is the second most populous municipality in Albania and one of the most populous on the Adriatic Sea with a growing number of inhabitants. According to the 2011 census, the municipal unit of Durrës had an estimated population of 113,249 of whom 56,511 were men and 56,738 women.

- Chill out on Vollga Beach. If you’d like a slightly quieter vibe, head a little north of Durres Port, to a small stretch of sand south of Currila beach.
- Explore the ancient Durres Amphitheatre. I bet you’d be surprised to learn that Durres is the most ancient city in Albania, with a history dating as far back as 627 B.C.
- See Durres Castle / Venetian Tower. One of the best places to see the political and religious upheavals that have centred in Albania is the Durres Castle and it’s extension, the Venetian Tower.
Durres is worth breaking away from its beaches and delving deeper into the center of the city. The second largest and most important city in Albania (after Tirana), Durres emerged about 2,600 years ago.
- Walking Up to The Royal Villa. If you’re looking for views of the city, there’s no better place to go than Durrës Hill, an easy walk from the city center.
- The Durrës Amphitheater. The highlight of the city is undoubtedly the Durrës Amphitheater, dating back to Roman times. Durrës was taken over by the Romans following the Roman-Illyrian wars of the 3rd century BC, and it quickly became one of the most important cities of the Adriatic region.
- More of Byzantine Durrës. After the fall of Western Rome, Durrës remained an important city under the Byzantine Empire, and numerous remnants from this period can be found throughout town.
- The Durrës Archaeological Museum. Durrës is such a historically significant city in Albania that it has its own archaeological museum. Established in 1951, it’s among the largest of its kind in all of Albania.
