The Smooth jazz genre in my opinion came from contemporary jazz. We used to listen to WJZZ in Detroit and about 90% of the music was instrumental with some vocals. The vocalist were artists like Anita Baker, Randy Crawford, Al Jarraeu, Michael Franks and others.
