Aug 3, 2024 · Three years after its completion a huge fire destroyed all the buildings and killed as many as 3,000 people. But the houses (a source of income for the bridge) were quickly rebuilt, lining the 282-metre (926-foot) length of the bridge and reducing the carriageway to only 4 metres (12 feet).
New London Bridge, c. 1870–1890. The old bridge continued in use while the new bridge was being built, and was demolished after the latter opened in 1831. New approach roads had to be built, which cost three times as much as the bridge itself.
There have been many reincarnations of London Bridge since the original Roman crossing in AD50. The most famous and longstanding of these was the “Old” Medieval bridge, finished in 1209 during the reign of King John.
Mar 24, 2024 · It survived two Great Fires in 1666 and 1725, which destroyed houses on the north and south ends of the Bridge. Despite these cataclysmic events, the Bridge’s size and longevity were a testament to its engineering. It was built between 1176 and 1209, about 150 feet east of the current London Bridge.
