In 1829, the Delawares were the first Indians to sign a treaty giving them land in what was to become Kansas. After 1830, nearly 30 tribes were given land in the areas.

During the American Civil War they returned to Kansas, and in 1867 they were removed to the Wichita Indian Reservation in Oklahoma, designated for the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes (Waco, Keechi [Kichai], and Tawakonie [Tawakoni]). Their estimated population in 1780 was 3,200; Wichita descendants numbered more than 1,900 in the early 21st century.

They remained in eastern Kansas during most of the nineteenth century. However, their tenure in the region seemed perpetually in doubt.
