The city was named after Richfield Township, which was established in 1858. It became an independent village in 1908 and was officially incorporated as a city in 1950. The first commercial airport in Minnesota, known as Wold-Chamberlain Field at the time, was located in Richfield. It later became the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
Electors of the newly created Richland met on May 11, 1858, and changed the name of their town to Richfield. The boundaries of Richfield included all of congressional township 28 Range 24 and parts of adjoining townships, which together contained about sixty-three square miles.
