Meissen (in German orthography: Meißen, IPA: [ˈmaɪsn̩] ), is a town of approximately 30,000 about 25 km (16 mi) northwest of Dresden on both banks of the Elbe river in the Free State of Saxony, in eastern Germany. Meissen is the home of Meissen porcelain, the Albrechtsburg castle, the Gothic Meissen Cathedral and the Meissen Frauenkirche.
Meissen is the easternmost wine area in Germany and on the northeastern edge of winegrowing in Europe. Meissen Wines are mostly white wines and they are, given their location, rather on the dry side. The most common grapes are Riesling , Müller-Thurgau , and Weißburgunder .

Meissen is a small town on the Elbe river downstream from Dresden which is world-famous for its production of porcelain. It is also known as "the cradle of Saxony" as it was from here that the Wettin dynasty established control of the area that later became the Free State of Saxony. For more than 300 years, Meissen porcelain has only been made in a single location. Initially this was the Albrechtsburg palace, and since the early 1860s it has been the manufactory that was built for expressly this purpose in Triebischtal in the city of Meissen.
Perched high above the Elbe River, it was Germany's first castle to be built solely as a residence. Today it houses a number of fine museums and collections, in which porcelain – the town's great passion – plays an unsurprisingly prominent role.
