  2. Oct 5, 2010 · We took a hard look at three of the most popular online mapping sites– Google Maps, MapQuest, and the up-and-coming Microsoft Bing Maps –to see which one got us from point A to point B (and...

    • Overview. ArcGIS Online. Esri has a death grip on the GIS industry. It’s not only GIS desktop software, but it’s now mapping in the cloud. ArcGIS Online (AGOL) is Esri’s cloud service with loads of functionality.
    • Pricing. ArcGIS Online. ArcGIS Online costs 2500$ for a single-user subscription. Esri also has a credit currency for advanced functionality. Yet the only drawback is that without credits you don’t have the same functionality as the full-fledged ArcGIS Online.
    • Functionality. ArcGIS Online. ArcGIS Online is loaded with cross-platform functionality. It’s built by the leading GIS software company in the world so you know it’s a class above the rest.
    • Popularity. While ArcGIS Online gets the lion’s share of the popularity, Mapbox is a close second place. Carto is third in the market share of popularity.
    • Mapillary. Mapillary has been coined by one map loving writer, the “darling of the mapping world.” Originally launched in 2013 with the goal to go toe-to-toe with Google Street View, Mapillary was able to map 3 million miles of streets by 2018 (only 5 years after launching), which puts it in the same playing field as Google, who as you remember had mapped 10 million, but launched in 2007 and has considerably more resources on their side.
    • Bing Maps. Bing Maps might be one of Google Maps largest competitors, as it is the second highest market share for a search engine (although 88% followed by 6% doesn’t quite seem like first and second places, so much as first and …….is there a second place?).
    • MapQuest. MapQuest is just as old as both Bing and Google Maps, and similarly to Google Maps, it offers both a web-based tool in addition to a mobile app, allowing you to sync your directions between your phone and computer.
    • HERE WeGo. HERE WeGo is a mobile app that specializes in offering various forms of transportation from subway/metro/subway to bus, bike, train, trolley or ferry.

    • MapQuest. MapQuest has been around for about as long as Google Maps has. It offers both a web-based tool as well as a mobile app. With a MapQuest account, you can sync all of your navigation plans between the web and your phone.
    • Waze. If you visit the Waze website, it doesn’t look like there’s a web-based tool at all. That is until you click the Live Map link in the menu. Even though the app is now owned by Google, it’s still one of the best Google Maps alternatives.
    • Bing Maps. Bing Maps is probably one of Google Maps’ most direct competitors. However, Microsoft doesn’t just try to copy the Google Maps interface to compete.
    • Here WeGo. This navigation service may not be quite as well known or popular as Google Maps or MapQuest, but it has its unique features. The Here WeGo mobile app is well known, but there’s also a website worth using if you want to take some time before you head out to plan out your trip.
